Google is working on a secretive new phone to launch this October.
The Pixel and Pixel XL have been incredibly successful phones for Google and they’re definitely going to release a brand new version of those phones later this year. However, word is that they’re also working a a larger version which is code named Taimen, which is a large fish. They’ve nicknamed them Muskie and Walleye which are also both fish. This is consistent with the fact that they’ve named their Nexus phones after fish in the past and assigned the names based on the projected size of the phone. It’s also consistent with the fact that Samsung is working on large and premium version of the S8 and Apple is working on the same for the iPhone 8. The trend towards bigger phones seemed to slow down last year but it’s clear Google, Apple and Samsung have something else in mind for the end of the year and next year.
It’s not entirely clear whether the Taimen will actually be a phone though. It is plausible that the Taimen could be the Pixel branded successor to the Nexus 9 which wasn’t well received but that could change with a Pixel tablet. It could also be a combination of a tablet and the Pixel Chromebook which recently got the ax. It would be smart for Google to build on the success of the Pixel and Pixel XL and launch a tablet. There’s clearly a market for tablets and Android definitely lacks the competition, by a lot. I can’t think of one Android tablet that I would use on a daily basis. I would use an iPad though. Hopefully, Google surprises us here and launches a true iPad competitor featuring some the the great things about the their phones. I can definitely see myself using a Google made Pad.
