Google is about to launch a new social app focused on photo editing and sharing in groups.
The new app is said to be a mix of Snapchat, Path and Google Photos with an emphasis on AI helping users edit and manipulate photos with friends. Google already has a fantastic app in Google Photos where photo editing and sharing is a breeze. The new app will take those smarts and add in a more social layer which will allow users to create groups around sharing photos. User will be able to upload, manually add text and filters and share the photos in a group setting. The Google Photos team is building the app which is a positive sign because we already know that Google Photos is an amazing app and their Photoscan app is pretty nifty as well.
Apple also just released a similar app called Clips which allows users to upload, edit and share photos and videos with friends or on other social networks like Facebook and Instagram. It sounds like this new Google app, which doesn’t have a name yet, will be pretty similar. Google does already have a head start with Google Photos and adding a more social layer is an increasingly common occurrence within Google’s apps. They’ve also been adding more and more social features to Google Maps like ride sharing, parking availability and location sharing. Google has never had success with a standalone social network to compete with Facebook and Instagram so it seems that they are making their utility apps a bit more social. I’ve always thought that Google Photos was a great app to build a social network around but Google needs to take it slow and not change the usefulness of the app. They’ve done it with Maps and hopefully they can so the same with this new social photo app.
