Lucky is the brand new chat bot for Google Allo and summoning it will bring you GIFs galore.
Google just released the new chat bot for Allo which will let users search and generate random GIFs while chatting with friends. When in a conversation, users can simply type @lucky, then a phrase like @lucky weird cats and Allo will reply with a randomly chosen GIF of a cat that they think is weird. Lucky is the second chat bot available in Allo behind Google Assistant (@google) and is pretty similar to the I’m Feeling Lucky functionality in Google Search but it’s focused on GIFs at this point. Google will likely add other results besides GIFs to match the feature set of the “I’m Feeling Lucky” search option.
While this is a cool feature, I’m not sure how many people really use the “I’m Feeling Lucky” search option and how many of those users will summon @lucky in Allo. I’d personally rather use Gboard to search for a specific GIF and choose the best one for the conversation I’m having. GIF search is supported in Allo and Google Messenger, Google’s main texting app. With that being said, Google is laying the ground work for more chat bots for Allo as the Actions for Google platform also launched for Google Assistant on Google Home recently. Those 60 plus actions already available on Google Home will likely make their way onto Allo by way of Google Assistant.
The more chat bots available on Allo the better because that’s what will make Allo a viable messenging app. It’s clear that Google wants Allo to be the smart messenging app and Google Messenger to be the texting app for users tied to SMS. There’s not a clear path for these two apps merging so making each one purposeful is key to user engagement.
